TPE-U

TPE-U means thermoplastic polyurethane.

Why choose it?

  • Good abrasion resistance
  • Performance in low temperatures (polyether type)
  • High shear strength

Why not choose it?

  • Some types – especially softer ones – might have migration problems that make the surface either hard or sticky in extended use. Please share your experiences if you have encountered this phenomenon!

Typical applications:

  • Wheels
  • Conveyor belts
  • Sport shoes

Please note:

TPE-U comes in two main variants: polyester and polyether, which are suitable for different purposes. Polyester is more common; polyether is used in low temperatures or in long term contact with water. The aliphatic version of TPE-U has, in my experience, good UV resistance. For more information about the different TPE-U variants, I find the Huntsman TPE-U leaflet informative.
